I sure hope you didn't buy a turf gator that needs " transmission work" If you did, what you'll be looking for when you drag it home tomorrow is your wallet.......

If you split the transaxle case, the shift arm, that goes into the yoke that rides in the shift collar on the input shaft, has a round button on it that sets in that yoke. Sometimes the weld breaks on them and the button just floats around in there. Once you get in there, there are numerous gears etc. that could be bad. That shift collar that rides on the input shaft has a needle bearing on the inside of it that goes bad and won't let it shift sometimes. There is also a spring that goes thru the input shaft that has a ball on each end that holds the collar in gear.

Well, it's not a turf, so that's good. Your shift arm is bent, it's supposed to be straight there. I don't know how much that's hurting you, what you have to do is unhook the linkage and see if you have forward and reverse when you change them by hand, then you can worry about adjusting the linkage. If you don't have forward and reverse you'll have to pull it out and split the case. If you get that far, don't take the side cases off where the axle shafts come out. That't the brakes and a whole different ballgame. I think what you are calling low and high gear is the diff lock lever. Down, the rear axle is locked so both sides pull, up is normal with just one side pulling. The transaxle has spyder gears in it so only one side pulls on normal operation so you don't tear your lawn up going around corners.

Purple, you can grind some of that weld off the back of that arm and weld that pin back on from the rear and save yourself 80 bucks. I do it all the time.

I would say if you want a trail machine, get a 4 wheeler. They are set up to go fast, they have stiffer springs to corner better, their center of gravity is lower and they handle better. Have a shorter turn radius and are easier to steer. If you want a good Gator, buy an XUV, I did.

I think you can plow better with an XUV. We just had a big snow around here and my son used his HPX with a V plow and he was very pleased at how it performed. He did most of the plowing in the V position and then finished it off with it in the straight blade configuration. I don't have any experience with the Polaris so I can't say anything that will help you.

Grandpa, basically a Turf Gator is a push-on-the-gas and go. If you have to sit and start it and put it in gear to move, it is not a Turf. If you have a 2004 Gator it should have round headlights and be a T series. If you have rectangular headlights it is pre 2004 and a 4x2.
